The cut feature is very handy for us viewing shots in context on Shotgun. We use it to be able to see how the shot looks with the shots before and after it.
To set this up, we have a cut for each sequence in the movie. The cut items don't have specific versions attached, instead we use the Pipeline and Status filters to get the latest versions from the relevant pipelines.
However an issue with this is that those filters aren't persistent. Whenever the session expires they get wiped away and have to be manually re-entered. Ideally, there could be default filters that get saved for users so that they don't need to repeatedly redo them for each new session.
