Pure HTTP API to access Shotgun data

I have searched the site, and it looks like no one has made this particular request. Let me know if this is not the case though. This request is related to a thread in the shotgun-dev Google group called "Simple solution needed for http access to API":

Basically, I would like to not only access Shotgun data through the Python API but through a web API as well. Providing a web API would really help with data visualization because I could leverage various data visualization libraries like D3.js or Chart.js.
