Grouping and pagination

When grouping items, it would be nice to be able to specify the number of items displayed per group, rather than items per page.

Displaying only 25 (or even 50) items on a page reduces the usefulness of being able to shrink and expand the groups when you have 10s or 100s of items per group.  If you could say "show me the top 5 items for each group type (based on the sort order)" instead then you could use grouping to get a more useful overview.

It's particularly relevant when you're looking at hundreds of thousands of notes, where you still want to be able to group by type but the more recent ones are likely to be more important. For example you could display all 5 of your note types on one page, sorted by date so that only the 10 most recent for each note type show up.

check out this post about iTunes-style filtering: https://shotgunsoftware.zendesk.com/forums/31278/entries/44956

i think an itunes-style browser would solve your problem ( think "Genre, Artist, Album" ... ) because once you applied the filters for what you were looking for  ( ex. all lighting notes for a particular artist ) only the items matching your filter would be displayed in the list, which you could then sort by date.  this iTunes-style browser would be an alternate view for groups, and would be particularly powerful combined with the hierarchical grouping coming in 1.9.

Great ideas y'all.  Rebecca, I'm going to check with the dev team to see if there are any performance issues with your implementation idea. I think we'd have to retrieve a lot of data to know how to build those groups, but I'll find out.  I'm guessing there would be some text after the last entry in a group saying the group was cropped and offering to load in the rest of the results?

Chad, I replied to your other post too about that idea, which I think is rad.  Perhaps we work on both ideas to see what comes out...

My comment would be that I'm not sure I like the way that parts of groups can get orphaned on seperate pages.  If a group's size is < the items per page number but it won't all fit on the current page I think I want it to do a page break and keep the group together on one page.

It's a little annoying to have a group with 8 items get split into 2 on one page and 6 on the other.

    Another thought.

Another way to approach it would be to have a "...more..." button or something similar at the bottom of each page.  Which you could click to view the current page + the next page.

It's not visually clear that there are more items inside a group on the next page.   It's actually not visually obvious that there is another page.  More visual feedback on page breaks would I think cause less confusion and reduce the potential of users mistaking how much information is available.  The classic 'student turning in a test without the back of the page answers filled in' scenario.

Maybe even add the entire page navigation right in the item list at the end in addition to the bottom right of the page in the navigation pane.
