When working with threaded entities, it would be useful to lock a thread against new posts/updates/replies without retiring it.
A good use would be when the thread is "closed". That way, some threaded entities can still be visible and searchable, but contribution to them can be stopped. Retiring the thread would make it invisible in searches.
