I am a pipeline engineer at cluster studio, (in Mexico) and well we find another solution to integrate shotgun API with github: using git log command, with this ,you can get all the information for a revision or a release and the next step is just upload it with shotgun API.
Well I do not know if it is the best way, but is we think is Good way.

Use a GitHub Python API (http://develop.github.com/p/libraries.html) to access whatever you want and then use the Shotgun Python API to send that information into Shotgun.
Cool Jake, we weren't aware of a GitHub Python API, with it we could expand what we already have.

When it is a new Release it automatically increments the version number of the app (depending on the change type/amount), and sends a Note to the users with the change log.
