Will 6,000 records slow down auto-suggest significantly?

Thinking of importing 6,000 records into "People".

99.99% of these will not be login accounts.  We're keeping a loose client database in SG, and after conferring with Don, decided we should just keep these contacts inside the "People" entity instead of using a parallel custom entity.

However, I'm curious how much (if at all) 6,000+ records would slow down the auto-suggest feature when, say, adding a recipient to a Note.  Since auto-suggest is the only way to create legit links, this is not a minor consideration.

Any thoughts from SG guys or from users with large databases?

The autocomplete function is tied to a heavily indexed table separate from the user table. This "Display Name Cache" table holds all of the items that are searched for autocomplete results and is tuned specifically for this purpose. So I can say pretty confidently that adding 6000 records shouldn't cause too much noticeable slowdown to your results.

It might, however require you to provide more characters to reach your desired entry. For example, if you currently have 3 people named "John" but after the import, you have 50. Simply typing "John" obviously may not bring up the result you're looking for initially. But that's easily remedied by doing your search on say, the last name instead.

Kevin - I can confirm both.  Having this many records is not slowing auto-suggest in any noticeable way.

And yes it's annoying to get way too many "Jim"s and "Ben"s auto-suggested.  Thank goodness my employees have funky middle names.

I've requested this before, but here goes again: it would be great to have the option to disable auto-suggest (on a per-field basis) for "People" who do not have active accounts.  When authoring a note, there's no reason to see 20 "John"s if none of them are active SG account holders.

    Pliny,

We can actually do this now as a custom request for your studio. Drop us a support email with the details and we'll set you up.
