Can someone explain smart cut fields?

Can someone explain exactly how smart cut fields work?  On my shot entity I  have:

smart_cut_duration

sg_cut_duration

smart_cut_in

sg_cut_in

smart_cut_out

sg_cut_out

smart_cut_summary_display

and also:

smart_head_in

sg_head_in

smart_head_out

smart_head_duration

and ditto for tail - I can't find an explanation anywhere for the relationship between these fields (also I'm not sure if we have added some of them ourselves - Tommy?)  Are there some docs I'm missing?

    Hey Ciaran,

What you're seeing here is our Smart Cut Fields feature, which you can enable/disable in the Admin > Site Preferences > Advanced section: Show "smart cut fields" in menus

In the UI, you'll find these fields in both the Shot and Element entity types under the Smart Fields header in the field chooser. These fields auto-calculate based on data entered into the various fields. Takes a bit getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite useful! Here's a quick summary:

These are the editable and calculating fields:

    Head In

    Head Duration

    Head Out

    Cut In

    Cut Duration

    Cut Out

    Tail In

    Tail Duration

    Tail Out

These are the un-editable summary fields:

Cut Summary: Summarizes the cut details in a tidy format like so:

    1 [9-108] 116

Duration Summary: Summarizes the number of frames in the handles and the cut like so:

    (8)(100)(8) = 116

Working Duration: Summarizes total number of frames needed

The best way to wrap your head around this is to start entering data to see how the calculations affect the other fields. Attached is a listing of the Smart Cut fields and some sample cut data to see how it all looks. Let us know if you run into any questions about this!

    Cheers,

    Stephen

The note on the admin page says you are deprecating these fields - so should I really just be turning them off and leaving them alone?

Hey Ciaran, good catch! We'll actually continue supporting these Smart Cut fields until we roll out user-defined Calculated Fields in Shotgun. At that point, we'll open up a discussion to see what's best for the Smart Cut fields. So feel free to dive in!
