Excluding Link Types when Grouping

If a Note is linked to a Shot, a Version, and a Playlist -- like Notes created from the Review App -- then when viewing a list of Notes, grouping by the "Links" field will group the Notes by all of those different links.  What I'd like to be able to do is only group by the linked Shots.

I saw this question, but it doesn't appear to work for me; I still get Notes being grouped by all the different links -- https://support.shotgunsoftware.com/entries/83142-Excluding-or-specifying-link-types-when-grouping

Any Ideas?

    Hi Brendan,

While it's not possible to wholly exclude other records/entities which are in the Notes.Links field when it comes to grouping, it is possible to make use of some of the advanced grouping functionality to more easily narrow down to just the Shot results in which you are interested. See my attached screenshot.

In it I've clicked Group > Advanced Grouping and added two grouping conditions. The first is to group Links by link type. This will create groups of entity types (Playlists, Versions, Shots, etc). The second is by "exact value", which will then group by the exact value (e.g. individual Playlists, Versions, or Shots) within those types.

From here you can collapse any top level groups you do not need (like Playlists or Versions) and focus on the Shots group. Let me know how that works for you, or if I can provide any clarification.

The advanced grouping is the best we could find, but we would really prefer exclusion types as well.   Mostly because I both want to see notes that are general to a shot.  As well as other times drill into notes on versions to ensure all notes were addressed on just the latest version.

The problem becomes finding notes that are *only* linked to the shot if you want general shot notes not version specific notes.   The director's notes "I want this shot to be light and fluffy" get lost in "Move that 10px to the left."

Just to add another data point to this ticket.  I tried the advanced grouping approach and a number of artists were confused that they had "duplicates" of all of the notes.  They thought they had double the number of notes to address.
