CPU Utilization in Firefox

Hi!

Why does the Shotgun project home page use up 25% of my CPU? Closing the tab or switching away from it immediately brings the CPU back down, so I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

The actual network traffic is very light, but it thinks it's doing something...

Is there any way to throttle this down?

Thanks very much!

Jos'h

    Hey Jos'h,

Sorry you're seeing such a heavy spike. Can you give us a little more info? Here's a few questions that would help us narrow down the details if you have some time to help us out:

    1. what platform and version of Firefox are you seeing this on?
    2. Do you see this with no other windows or tabs open except for the Shotgun Project overview?
    3. are you seeing it on any other browser?
    4. are other users seeing it in Firefox as well?
    5. how are you measuring the CPU and network usage?

Sorry, I know it's a lot to ask, but answer what you can. I ran some tests on our own dev sites and wasn't seeing anything out of the ordinary so any specifics you can provide would be great!

    Hi!

    >     1.    what platform and version of Firefox are you seeing this on?

    •  FireFox 22 on Windows XP.
    •  FireFox 23 on Windows XP.
    •  FireFox 21 on Windows 7.

     >     2.    Do you see this with no other windows or tabs open except for the Shotgun Project overview?

Nope. Note that I can have the Project Overview /in/ a tab and low CPU (see time spent entering support ticket in previously attached graph), but when I switch back to that tab, CPU immediately goes back up.

     >     3.    are you seeing it on any other browser?

What other browsers are there that exist?

     ; - ) Kidding.

    •  Opera doesn't display the problem.
    •  Shotgun won't even start on IE8.
    •  Chrome, Safari and PlayStation Portable web browsers unavailable for testing.

     >     4.    are other users seeing it in Firefox as well?

Yes, verified by none other than Matt Welker.

     >     5.    how are you measuring the CPU and network usage?

     Sysinternals Process Explorer -- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals

If you don't know about Process Explorer, you should totally get it -- great program.

     Thanks!

    Hey Josh,

After some fiddling, I confirmed what you're seeing and I have submitted an internal bug ticket (22706) for it. I can't say whether it's something we're doing or if it's some issue with FF on Windows, but we'll check it out a little deeper and see what we can find.
