Maya Publishing & Loading

I'm attempting two things with little success, and am hoping you can shed some light on these.

First of all I'm working on an asset in the "model"  task (assigned to me in shotgun).  From Shotgun I've launched Maya2014 and used the <Shotgun> menu to publish my work.  I'm noticing that when I navigate to the task within Shotgun, I see the publish that's been created for the Model task but in the VERSIONS tab it says "No versions match your search."  I'm not Filtering my results.  It appears that the publishing function did not create a Version.  Is this the expected behaviour?

Moving forward, I've attempted to load what I've deemed the "approved model" into Maya so that I can start rigging it.  So I've launched Maya from Shotgun again, and I'm presented with the Shotgun File Manager:

Project : project_test
Asset:   asset_test
Task:     Rig

The Available Work Files column is 'empty' because I haven't published or saved a workfile for the Rig task yet.  So, what is the best way to propagate the published model file into next production Task (Rig, in this case)?

    Hi Matt.

When you publish something through Toolkit, it appears in Shotgun as a Published File, not a Version.  The Versions are meant to be reserved for review-centric content (ex. a comp you review in Screening Room, say).  You might need to ensure that there is a Published Files tab on your Asset detail page in Shotgun.  This doc goes through how to add it:

In terms of grabbing the model for a rig Task, the idea here is to use the Loader.  Your model publish should show up in the Loader.  Do you see it on your side?

    Hi Ryan,

Thank you for the clarification.  I was simultaneously publishing from Photoshop which automatically created a new "Version", which is why I was confused.  I did have the publish tab setup, but thank you for the link.

So the best workflow while moving onto a downstream task (Rig) for the first time is to use the loader in the Model workspace to load the maya file.  At that point, I should use the Shotgun menu and change workspace to (Rig) so I can save workfiles, and do publishes.   Does this sound correct?

    Hi Matt.

Yup!  That sounds correct to me.  You'll want to change your workspace to Rig so that your subsequent publish will be properly associated in Shotgun with the Rig (rather than the Model).  Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Ryan.
