An engine for After Effects is something that has come up in discussion with clients and beta testers. Is this something that would be interesting to you? Taylor Jobe Being able to work with After Effects would make tank a significantly more compelling offer for us.

Rob Blau Hey there Taylor,
We are planning on putting together the After Effects engine in the first half of the year. From our early investigations, it'll look a lot like the Photoshop engine, where there will be an After Effects panel that contains ways to interact with Tank apps. That said, an engine is nothing without the right apps that'll actually do something for you.
What kind of things are you hoping for from an After Effects engine? Are there specific things in AE that you're looking to automate or integrate?

Andy Davenport Hi Rob,
Another one here looking forward to an After Effects engine becoming available.
It'd be great to be able to start AE from Shotgun and have it launch with the selected shots render passes imported & waiting for you in the Project tab :-)
Cheers,
Andy

Cedar Connor We are also interested in using tank in our productions. We work in a hybrid mograph/VFX world as lots of small to medium shops do. An After Effects engine is essential to that workflow. In addition a Cinema 4D engine would round out the mograph tools nicely. We are mostly interested in apps forcing file structure and naming conventions. Also logging renders back in Shotgun. I imagine this to work as a replacement " AE submit to render que" script. Shotgun tags added at submit time determine the location "shot/prerenders" and the file name "xxx_prerenders"

Oliver Timm We use AE here for Comping - it would definitely be another feather in Shotgun's cap so to speak!
-
Michael Jackson While it would be a pie in the sky request, it would be nice to have something similar to the nuke read tank node. In the current schema of after effects, I don't think there is an equivalent 'write node', but coming up with something similar for applying shotgun metadata is super important.

Ryan Mayeda Thanks for the +1 Oliver! We had a slide on this at our Siggraph user group, but it's worth mentioning here as well - AE is part of our next group of priority engine integrations along with Mari and Cinema4D, so we're aiming to dive into this soon!
Ryan.

Tim Crowson Just to chime in here.... an AE app for Tank would be nearly vital for us to fully adopt the Toolkit. We do use Fusion and Nuke on occasion, but 95% of our comp work is in AE. -
Armando Ricalde We've managed to have a working Engine for AE on Windows, but we haven't had time to solve a sockets problem on Macs.
Pretty soon we'll be posting a video explaining how this Engine works in order to encourage other studios to help solving the problems we have.Doc

Tim Crowson Hey, we're on Windows.... what a coincidence.... ;-)
-
Armando Ricalde Just to let you know, we've released a video explaining what we have so far

François TARLIER hello guys,
Is there any update on the release of this engine ?
thx
F.
-
Ryan Mayeda Hi Francois.
No update yet from our side, but we're still hoping to be able to pick this up as part of our roadmap later in the year, but realistically it'll be post-Siggraph. We'll post an update as soon as there's more to report...!
Ryan.

Mike Fisher Is there some form of this available? We're willing to work with a bare bones version of an AE engine. Big project coming up and the AE engine would be very handy.
-
Rob Blau Hi there Michael,
Unfortunately we don't have any more update than what Ryan posted above; that we're hoping to pick up the engine after Siggraph, but we don't have anything concrete right now to report. Hopefully more news soon!
-
Tom Bridges Just adding to this: we're very interested in the AE engine too. Thanks!
-
Joseph mulvanerty I am also voicing my interest in After Effects integration. Subscribed for updates!

Steven Quinones In the meantime, is it possible to get Hiero to output a AEComp the same way we get Nuke comp when setting up and exporting shots. Has anyone done any scripts like that that we may look at. At least that way our outputs and imports can be handled programatically and we can avoid my students touching the file system as much as possible.
-
Armando Ricalde Hi Steven,
Have you seen this?

Steven Quinones That looks promising. I'll take a look. Thanks!
-
Tim Crowson I don't suppose there's any progress on an AE engine, per chance...?

KP Hey guys,
Just wanted to give an update. Obviously we've had a lot of various roadmap priority shifts over the course of this thread. At the moment, this doesn't sit in our current roadmap for the next few months. We are aware there's interest in After Effects and it's not falling off our radar! But it's clear there are other priorities that we need to address in the immediate future first, before we can revisit this one.
The Adobe products are bit more involved to build engines for since they don't have Python and they recently changed their API as well. But please keep sharing your thoughts. And if you are interested in an After Effects engine, add a comment (ideally with some details about what you'd like to see) so we can see the interest in it from our users.
-
Joseph mulvanerty Thanks for letting us know the status on this.
-
Lex Konishi We're a primarily Adobe shop, so it would be nice to use the toolkit to it's fullest potential. I'd settle with rudimentary file management and shotgun integration for an After Effects engine.
-
Jesse Lucas After Effects integration with Shotgun is steadily rising on our to-do list. If you're building new engines this should be the first.
-
KP @Lex It's clear there's interest in this. Our recent trip to NAB only confirmed this further. Our roadmap is pretty stacked for the year at this point though so I don't expect to see this bubble up in the nearest future unfortunately. However, when we do shift gears again and start tacking some additional engines, After Effects will likely be towards the top of the list. Sorry I don't have better immediate news. Stay tuned!

Timor Kardum Hey guys,
not sure if everyone has seen this yet.
As you can see we don´t use toolkit for our AE integration (it´s three years old) but it´s still a very smooth workflow.
-
Raed Abbas I can't wait to get AE integration.
