RV not working after atempting to set up a floating licence

Hi There,

I installed RV on two windows workstations, and then used the tweak license installer and hit the set license server button on the workstation with the valid license - however RV does not work now on the licensed workstation (or the other one!).

I do need to go back through the documentation and start again, but how do I rectify the original license so it still works on the main workstation? hope that all makes sense!

I then realised:

I have worked out what was wrong my end! did not know this would happen! I am currently connecting to the workstation that has the licence using remote desktop, it seems it does not like this! If I use RV on the workstation it works fine, weird!

Is there a way of telling if my licence is a floating one or not?

Cheers
Iskander

    Hi There,

Am I correct in saying that if you licence says 'string machine = any' as opposed to the example below the licence is a floating licence?

Sorry for all the stupid questions, I just don't want to corrupt my licence and not be able to use it at all!

    Cheers

    Hi Iskander,

All tweak licenses can be uses as floating licenses. You do/should not make changes to use your license as a floating license. I think the best approach is to follow the recommended installing steps in the following guide. If you run into any trouble please share with us the exact command you were trying to run as well as any and all output you were seeing in the logs and on the command line:

    http://tweaksoftware.com/static/documentation/rv/current/html/tlm_server.html#_recommended_installation_process

    Thanks,

    Hi Jon,

Thank you for your quick reply - great, I was unaware that all tweak licences can be used as floating, thank you for clearing that up. Great, I will attempt to set up the licence server - hopefully it will all go smoothly! so far, most of it has installed etc, just needing to make sure that I get the nssm setup correctly. I will continue to read the documentation.

    Cheers

    Hi Iskander,

That sounds great! Please keep me posted.

In case my previous comment was confusing I wanted to add some clarification about licenses. If you're using floating licenses, then only the license server machine will have "keyed" licenses like the above.  All other machines on which you want to run RV will have "client" licenses, which just contain a pointer to the license server machine (hostname or IP address, and port number). What I was trying to say before is that all "keyed" licenses can be used as floating licenses when served by the license server.

Some info about client licenses here:
    http://www.tweaksoftware.com/static/documentation/rv/current/html/rv_client_licenses.html

Also RV uses the GPU directly and this is often not possible over a remote desktop connection.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,

Great thank you re:the GPU - that makes sense as it works fine when I am physically on that workstation!

Ok, thank you with regards to licensing. I am still trying to get it up and running along side my current workload, I am still getting errors but I need to spend a little more time reading the documentation!

    Thanks for your help

    Cheers

    Hi Jon,

I am still setting up the floating licence - just haven't had a chance to properly sit down and do it step by step!

Was wondering, I have installed the latest version on the new workstation(with a trial licence), and it is having issues with scrubbing (only when scrubbing over the image - not the timeline).

Would this be due to my setup and hardware? or is there a bug in the latest release? I have:

    Windows 7

    quardro k2200

    1xDell U2412M

    2xSamsung syncmasters

The paint tool also lags. The other workstation works fine with the two samsung monitors, but it is still using the old version of RV. I haven't tried it with the Dell monitor yet.

    Cheers

    Hi Jon,

Sorry, me again! Not to worry, it appears to be the wacom playing up! as it works perfectly with a mouse! how strange, will have to sort that.

    Hi Iskander,

I am not sure if it will help in your situation, but on the General tab of RV's preferences you can click the check box next to "Treat Stylus Events as Mouse Events". That might help here.

    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,

That has done it - Thank you :) ! I really should read the documentation more before I post !!

Once I get a chance to try out setting up the floating licence I will make sure I read it all properly before posting anything!!

    Thanks again,

    Hi Iskander,

I am glad that helped! There is a lot to go over so be too shy to ask if you don't find what you are looking for in the docs.

    Thanks,

    Hi Jon,

Thank you for the help previously, I haven't got it set up yet as I haven't had the time - hopefully will get some time this week to set it up properly!

Was wondering, does rv:link only work with http and not https?

Only reason I ask is I have setup https on my server now and the links only work with http - it could be down to my certificate not being properly configured on my server but just wanted to check?

    Cheers

    Hi Iskander,

The rvlink protocol is its own protocol outside of http and https protcols in the same way mailto calls out to your mail client. I am not sure I follow your question. Can you please share an example link syntax?

    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,

I think it is my mistake! I changed my global variable for all links on from http to https on certain pages and it made it not work!

    Original:

    rvlink:// http://www.icmstudios.co.uk/...

    new:

    rvlink:// https://www.icmstudios.co.uk/...

Will need to now sort out the licence server as my trial licence has expired on the new workstation!

Congrats on the merger by the way, hopefully it works out well for RV :)

    Cheers

    Hi Jon,

Thank you for your quick reply. Basically I just changed the http to https in the code:

The old link used to be:

    <a href="rvlink:// http://www.icmstudios.co.uk/test.mov">http version</a>

Then I changed it to the below and it stopped working:

    <a href="rvlink:// https://www.icmstudios.co.uk/test.mov">https version</a>

So, for now I have changed the links back to http. I might try it and see if it works without the http all together!

    Cheers

    Hi Iskander,

Thank you for the kind words!

I don't think you want http or https to show up in any part of your rvlink as that would be two protocols in one link. Unless you are using the limited streaming capabilities of RV to play your movies. Please send us the entire link syntax of both a working and non-working link.

    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi Iskander,

I see. That does mean that you were leveraging the new-ish and fairly limited movie streaming functionality in RV which does not currently support https. Normally users configure rvlinks that point to local media like on our rvlink test page.

Just so you know I can see the movie you have at those link (in case that is not what you intend).

I also can load the https movie with my development version of RV that does support streaming over https. I cannot predict when that will be ready for release however, but both movies do load and play for me.

Can you please tell me if your intention is to use rvlink to initiate streaming playback or if you have an internal web site that points to locally accessible files for your users?

    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,

    Thank you for your reply.

Great that it works on the development version - I can wait until that one is ready and utilize that option! Yes, hopefully, with both those links you should have been able to get access to the video. That is what I was experiencing, I could open it with quicktime, and download them but not view it with RV.

I do intend to use RV with streaming playback, externally and internally. The streaming worked perfectly until I got the ssl certificate!  It is for my current setup for client feedback and review. The way most clients view the videos is by using the html5 video that is embed in the web page or quicktime downlaod, it is only me using RV at the minute. I know I could use shotgun etc, but at the minute, it could be overkill for the workload I do (usually 2-3 shots per job).

If the project sizes increase then I would investigate using Shotgun :)

    Cheers

    Hi Iskander,

I see. Well I will try to let you know when we update ffmpeg, but I would look for it in our release notes too.

    Thanks,

    Hi Jon,

Great, thank you. I will look out for them, and hopefully will end up with a licence of Shotgun too in the long term!

    Hi Jon,

Got the floating licence working :) It was a combination of not having the .exe after the tlm_server and firewall blocking the service!

Thanks for the documentation, has helped!

    Hi Jon,

    :)

Just so you know, my first pass of the documentation led to my confusion.

I normally add program folders that I may use through the command line into my 'environment Variables' - just so I can run them from any folder. That made me think that I was automatcially using the .exe version - not that I had to type:

    tlm_server.exe -fg -f <my_license_file>.gto

So, basically, me rushing through the documentation and not fulling taking it in!

    Cheers
