Caching only one layer of a stack at a time?

We're trying to set up RV in our studio for grabbing a bunch of shots to watch whole episodes and also dailies. For both of these, we're interested in having sequences with stacks in them so we could have these stacks contain a few layers with older versions of the current shot. That way you could swap out a newer version for an older one and watch it in context of the current sequence.

However that drastically affects the buffer and loading time because RV caches every layer of a stack even though only the top one is actually visible at all. I had thought that maybe using Replace instead of Over for the view mode would help, but it seems like everything is still being cached and any pixels not visible are just ignored.

So does anyone have a solution to this or a workaround they've used in the past to handle this a different way?

    Hi Gary,

I think you would likely be better served with Switches or Folders rather than Stacks. I would only use Stacks when there was a need to show more than one layer at a time.

Also what you are describing sounds a lot like what the Versioning Prototype package does. Have you looked at that optional package on the Packages tab of RV's preferences? Here is a link to more info:

Please have a look and let me know if that is the kind of thing you have in mind.

    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,

    That's it exactly! Thanks.
I must've missed that section of the documentation, but in future I can browse through the packages read me files from RV.

    Thanks again,
    Gary

    Great Gary!

I am glad that helped. Please don't hesitate to open new topics, threads, or tickets if you run into anything else.

    Thanks,
