DPX-C is a dpx variant devised by Cineform. It uses the Cineform codec to compress @ 12bit log 4.4.4.4 The result is a fantastic compromise as for most projects, image fidelity is more than good enough @ less than one tenth the file size. This would result in real time playback over a network.

Thanks for the suggestion. We have had very few questions about Cineform codecs. We will be interested to see if these files are more widely adopted by the industry. If they do become more widespread we will investigate the possibility and costs of supporting them, but based on the current level of interest we have seen so far, I don't expect this to happen soon.

Its a catch22. As a format, DPX-C can only be widely used once it gains broad adoption across applications. However, the Cineform SDK would allow you to add the decoder component without licensing cost (I think). Encoding could be performed via Quicktime or the DPX2CF utility assuming you have a Cineform license. The key here is the ability to stream from an image sequence @ 2k reliably over a network. Both Fusion and Nuke now have access to plugins to support DPX-C, hopefully that is just the beginning.
