RV Opening Media URL

Hi,

I've read about RVLink, and was very interested in it. However, is there a way for RV to play a media that lives in the web, given a URL that's not an RVLink URL?
I couldn't find a documentation on this, so I'm just wondering, because it will be really useful!

    Hi Andry,

    There is no way to do this at present. This is on our internal development list, but is not currently near the top of the priority queue. I will report back here when there is something new to say. Thank you for the heads up!

    Hi Jon,

    Am I correct in saying that this means: if the video is located on a web server and not a local server the rvlink won't open? Sorry just trying to work out what I am doing wrong! I get rv to load, it just says the file doesn't exist!

    Chances are I am being really think!

    Hi Iskander,

    Yes you are correct that streaming over http is not supported by rvlink. We have some very limited support for streaming over http, but there are several caveats. Please read the following documentation on the matter:

    Ok, cool, thank you. Most of the time it will be done through a local network, however there is the odd time I need to set it up over the web.

    Please correct me if I am wrong, I would need to create a RVSession file. is there any documentation available as to how to set one up?

    So, would it be, I create a RVSession file, and then call that to open through the http link/javascript? sorry for my ignorance!

    Hi Iskander,

    As of 4.0.13 you can use the http URL the same way you would use a local file path. To that end you do not need to create a session file. I was simply trying to point out that this new streaming feature is limited in capability for the moment.

    I think the best thing for you to do is to test it out with the kinds of media you plan to stream first. You can try by launching RV from the command line:

    rv http://this/is/a/sample/non-functional/url.mov

    If that works then we can talk about how to incorporate it into your workflow.

    Hi Jon,

    Great thank you for your help. Strangely I did try that yesterday on the off chance it would work - which it didn't unfortunately! Just tried it again,and it failed again, do I need RVIO to get this to work as I only have RV or do I just need to edit my environmental variables?

    ERROR: Could not locate 'http://this/is/a/sample/non-functional/url.mov' on disk. (0)

    Hi Jon,

    No, sorry, still same issue, I tried it with www and without as my website automatically adds the www infront, will that cause an issue?

    2) Can you please send me one of the movie links you are trying to use that is not working?

    Just seen you last post and that is not working either, hmm, ERROR: Could not locate 'http://img.movavi.com/suite/tutorials/streaming/stream-quicktime-video.mov' on disk. (0)

    Sorry for the hassle, I am sure it must be something I have set up wrong!

    Thank you for the sample. I was able to open it and stream it with yesterday's release. Are you sure you are using at least version 4.0.13? It was released only yesterday. Please let me know which version you are using and on which platform.

    Just noticed my command prompt is saying it is loading 4.0.12, I will edit my environmental variables and try it again - sorry for the inconvenience! Will let you know if that works.
