Accessing meta data and EXIF data within a Python script

Is there a way to get the meta data or EXIF data form the current source within a Python script?

I have found this article: https://tweaksoftware.zendesk.com/entries/21289917-Displaying-metadata-per-frame

But I have not found a way to translate the MU script to Python and I was wondering if anybody has a Python script which is doing a similar thing.
